How often do all of us take for granted the idea of our travelling.... If its a daily thing - we jump in our mode of transport and minutes later we are point B... no real concentration towards the "event" but just the typical commute... Whens the last time anyone went for a real drive?... For no real reason other than just that... Find a path and enjoy that as the event and destination....
For me its really using the car for what i would buy it for... Fun... Enjoyment... Some of my friends share the same idea... so we got together on the long weekend and headed towards the garden route...
If you know the area from PE onwards, first up is Van Stadens Pass... which is a must for any enthusiast...
Many years ago i travelled up and down this route before the toll roads, and i remembered certain turns which as a kid scared me.. Winding sharp hairpin bends in and then out of a valley then may have not been ideal to me, but being in the drivers seat maybe now i could gain my own perspective... We headed for Bloukraans pass with no idea what was in store...
From Storms River side the road is pretty much "closed".. Its funny as we all have what i guess you would call sports cars, but we actually needed a 4 x 4 to get over the first obstacle, a large mound of sand.... I seemed to convince the other guys it was easy to get over, and so they went and as luck would have it, got over... Me on the other hand, i got stuck... the 86 on the stock wheels was my first choice for this route but didnt seem to be a good idea with the ride height set so low... One or two locals arrived and eventually we managed to get it over... With the heavy rains and so on the weekend made it more difficult but didnt make us less excited....
What can i say.... its more than i remember, better, more scenic, more beautiful, and a drivers paradise... Wet roads and mist added to the setting but didnt help the driving... Who cared.... Somehow in all of it just being there was enough... driving and 20kmh and taking in the surroundings....

If you havent been i would make an effort... I plan on going back sometime when the weather is better, maybe with a more powerful rearwheel drive :).......
PS... stop in at stormsriver village..... go visit Elvis... Have a cheese burger..... and milkshake
